If the universe were reversed, space filled with rocks and planets as spheres of vacuum embedded in the rock, what would the gravity work out to?
sanakan updated on 3 Apr 2012:
I'm working off the idea that in an infinite expanse of uniform matter, you would experience no gravitational pull in any direction, since every side would cancel out every other side (like being in the center of a planet). If a hole were made in the rock, though, you'd feel no pull from that hole, and if you were at the edge of the hole you'd feel a pull equal to the missing mass, but in the opposite direction.
Does the math work out on this? Would a 'solar system' of star-and-planet sized holes in the rock experience opposite-magnitude gravitational effects on each other? Assuming no density irregularities, would it still manage to collapse into black holes, considering infinite matter?
This assumes Newtonian mechanics, I guess, because I assume the idea of an infinite expanse of uniformly dense matter is in some way non-physical when considering general relativity.
As far as general relativity goes, would that much matter mess it up, or would the stress-energy thingy at every point just be zero?
Anyways, sorry if this question is ridiculous, and thanks for reading.

sanakan on swearing as a literary technique
sanakan updated on 6 Feb 2012:
In dialogue it's obvious that it's the character saying it, but how about in the third-person limited narration? My thinking has been that the narration is basically their internal transcript of events, so swearing is alright, but I don't know if that's legitimate.

sanakan on swearing as a literary technique
sanakan updated on 6 Feb 2012:
Well, the story has time travel in it (that's why the time period is unclear), so it's not so much anachronism as a tampered timeline. Is that more acceptable?

swearing as a literary technique
sanakan updated on 6 Feb 2012:
Am I ever going to get away with this?
I'm writing a novel, not too long, but one of the central parts of the plot is that the time period is unclear. It's ostensibly set in turn of the century Victorian England (courtly things, sailboats, early steam liners, computers referred to as difference engines), but there are cues towards the era being very different.
So, the diction of the characters is not in keeping with Victorian England, but I don't know how to indicate that this makes sense and isn't just me swearing for lack of better words. I really like the swearing, because it helps build the world (low consequence, bright colors, fast action) and let's me avoid Victorian sensibilities, but I don't know how much it turns people off when they read it.
When you read a piece and there's swearing, does it immediately turn you off? Do you think less of the author?

1582 today
sanakan updated on 4 Feb 2012:
somewhere around 45000 total for the month. that's probably as close as I'm going to get to a national novel writing month, and I didn't even do it at the right time.
the handiest thing is having somewhere online to post it. the idea that somebody somewhere might expect me to turn something up daily is pretty motivating.

sanakan on Experiences with magnetic implants and self-surgery.
sanakan updated on 15 Nov 2011:
We're endorsing science. Isaac Newton spent a lot of time sticking a spoon behind his eye to induce colors in his eye. Common experiments into the effects of pressure on humans involved scientists putting themselves inside diving bells and then cranking them up, frequently popping ear drums and causing large amounts of pain. He's not slicing other people's hands open. Why is this bad?

Both players were mad focused on the central broodlord/viking micro war. At one point, PuMa sent marines up to deal with the infestor, but I think he thought it was burrowed or a drop or something.
